Migrating from relayr
What happened
relayr ceased operations in July 2025. Munich Re, which had acquired the company in 2018, announced in spring 2025 that it would focus more clearly on its core business, and winding down relayr was part of that repositioning.
Founded in Berlin in 2013, relayr began with the Wunderbar sensor kit and later moved into industrial IoT — retrofit kits, middleware for connecting industrial equipment, and IoT consulting.
Because the platform is gone rather than sold, affected teams have no continuity option and must rehome workloads.
What this means if you are affected
- This is a hard migration rather than an optional one — there is no version of the platform still running to stay on.
- If you still hold exported data from the wind-down, that is the asset worth preserving; it cannot be recovered later.
- Retrofit sensors deployed on industrial equipment generally keep working — the gap is the cloud layer that received their data, not the hardware.
- Worth using the move to reconsider connectivity as well: hardware tied to a single vendor's cloud is what made this disruptive.

The migration, step by step

Inventory what is still deployed
Establish which sensors and gateways are physically installed and still transmitting, and where that data is currently going, if anywhere.

Re-establish connectivity
Point gateways and devices at Qubitro over MQTT or HTTP, or through a LoRaWAN network server integration if the hardware is LoRaWAN.

Decode the payloads
Check the template library for your hardware first. Where a template exists, decoding and a starter dashboard come with it; otherwise a decoder function handles the payload format.

Load any historical data you retained
If you exported data during the wind-down, import it so trends and baselines survive the move.

Rebuild dashboards and alerting
Recreate the views and alert rules the business actually relied on. In practice this is usually a smaller set than what existed.

- Is relayr still operating?
- No. relayr ceased operations in July 2025 following Munich Re's decision to refocus on its core business.
- Does my relayr hardware still work?
- In most cases the sensors and gateways are fine — what disappeared is the cloud platform receiving their data. If the hardware speaks MQTT, HTTP or LoRaWAN, it can be pointed at Qubitro. Devices locked to a proprietary endpoint with no way to change it are the harder case and may need replacing.
- Can I recover data from relayr?
- Not through us, and realistically not at all if it was not exported during the wind-down. If you do still hold an export, it can be imported into Qubitro so history is preserved.
